Rs 1,499 is about 6 person-hours on one kitchen, roughly Rs 250 a person-hour, and as with a single bathroom the higher hourly rate is the travel and the setting up landing on one room rather than a whole day. What it buys: every cabinet exterior, shutter, handle and cabinet top degreased; the tile backsplash and the wall behind the hob worked until the grease is off rather than smeared; the sink, its drain and the wall behind it; the hob exterior, its pan supports and the counter around it; the exhaust fan grille and blade; the fridge exterior including the top and the sides you cannot see; the door, the window and their channels; and the floor, skirting and grout worked by hand. Two things are not in this price and both are the ones people assume are. The chimney is not. Cleaning a chimney properly means taking the canopy off and removing the blower wheel, and that is a different job with a different method on its own page, at Rs 899. A kitchen clean will wipe the outside of your chimney and will not pretend that did anything for the suction. And the inside of the fridge is not, unless you empty it first, in which case it is Rs 300. Cabinet interiors are the same rule: exteriors and tops always, interiors only where they are empty when we arrive, because cleaning around your dal is not cleaning. What we will also not do is put a caustic degreaser on aluminium or on an anodised or powder-coated surface to make old grease disappear faster. It works, and it leaves the surface pitted and dull permanently. The degreaser used here is alkaline, aluminium-safe and rinsed, and heavy old grease takes more passes rather than a harsher chemical.
