Rs 299 buys travel, the time to look properly at what is wrong, and a written price. It is not the price of the repair, which is the whole reason it is spelled out here: the low advertised figure that turns into a bill four times its size is the standard shape of this trade. Approve the work on that visit and the Rs 299 comes off the job in full. Decline and you have paid Rs 299 for a diagnosis and a written quote that is yours to take to anyone. Small adjustments are done inside the visit at no extra charge, because they take minutes and charging for them is petty: easing a door or drawer that has swollen and sticks, tightening loose knock-down fittings, and re-seating a shutter that has dropped on its hinges. Realistic totals for the jobs that most often follow, with the Rs 299 already deducted. A hinge or handle replacement is Rs 120 of labour per hinge plus Rs 60 to Rs 450 for the part. A drawer channel pair is Rs 350 of labour plus Rs 180 to Rs 900. An almirah shutter re-hung and re-aligned is Rs 500 to Rs 1,200. A re-glued and clamped joint on a solid wood frame is Rs 400 to Rs 900. And the one worth saying out loud before you spend anything: particle board that has swollen from water does not come back. Re-gluing a swollen board holds for a few months at best, and we will tell you when replacing the shutter is the cheaper honest answer rather than take the money twice.

• Swollen particle board is not repairable and we say so instead of gluing it and coming back in three months
