The Shuunnya promise

The efficient one for a room that runs long hours, with the ISEER, the annual units and the payback all printed so the star is derived rather than asserted.

  • ISEER 5.2, 720 units a year on the 1.5 ton over BEE's 1,600 hours, 960 at 3 star
  • Rated cooling 5,275 W on the 1.5 ton to IS 1391 (Part 2), exactly 1.50 ton
  • Copper condenser and evaporator tubes, aluminium fins, copper pipe kit included
  • Installation not included, not arranged by us, an installation leak not covered

Details

The efficient one, and the page prints the arithmetic instead of the adjective. Rated cooling on the 1.5 ton is 5,275 W, measured to IS 1391 (Part 2) at the standard rating condition. One ton of refrigeration is 3,517 W, so that is exactly 1.50 ton. Tonnage inflation is the classic cheat here, and a unit sold as 1.5 ton that measures 4,200 W is 1.19 ton, so read the watts on the rating plate rather than the name on the box. Now the star. This unit is ISEER 5.2 and uses 720 units a year on the 1.5 ton over the 1,600 running hours the BEE label assumes. Our 3 star, which is the same machine with a smaller heat exchanger, is ISEER 3.9 and uses 960, because 5.2 divided by 3.9 is exactly four thirds. The difference is 240 units, or Rs 1,920 a year at Rs 8 a unit. The 1.5 ton costs Rs 9,000 more than the 3 star, so it repays in a little under five years; the 1 ton gap is Rs 7,000 against Rs 1,280 a year, which is five and a half; the 2 ton gap is Rs 11,000 against Rs 2,560, which is four and a third. Bigger unit, faster payback, because the saving scales with capacity while the price gap does not scale as fast. And the honest edge of it: below roughly 700 to 900 running hours a year, depending on tonnage, this never repays inside the machine's life and you should buy the 3 star instead.

  • ISEER 5.2. Annual units 480 (1 ton), 720 (1.5 ton), 960 (2 ton) over 1,600 hours, so about Rs 3,840, Rs 5,760 and Rs 7,680 a season at Rs 8 a unit
  • Rated cooling 3,517 W (12,000 BTU/h), 5,275 W (18,000) and 7,034 W (24,000), to IS 1391 (Part 2) at 35 C outdoor and 27 C dry bulb, 19 C wet bulb indoor. Exactly 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 ton
  • Condenser and evaporator tubes are copper with a 0.3 mm wall, and the interconnecting pipe kit in the box is copper. The fins are aluminium, as they are on every split air conditioner including the ones that print 100 percent copper, because a copper fin costs several times more and buys nothing. What copper buys is repair: a leaking copper tube is brazed on site, an aluminium micro channel coil is replaced whole
  • Twin rotary inverter compressor, variable 15 to 90 Hz, R32 refrigerant at GWP 675 against 2,088 for R410A. R32 is mildly flammable and is a reason to have the unit handled by someone who knows it
  • Installation is not included and we do not arrange it. A split has to be mounted, piped, vacuumed and gas checked by someone competent, which in most cities costs Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 for a standard fit, with core cutting, extra pipe, a stand and cabling on top. That is what installers charge, not a quotation from us
  • The outdoor unit ships pre charged for a pipe run up to 5 m: 0.70 kg of R32 on the 1 ton, 1.05 kg on the 1.5 ton, 1.45 kg on the 2 ton. Beyond 5 m the installer adds about 20 g a metre
  • An installation caused leak is not a manufacturing fault and is not covered. A badly flared joint is the commonest thing that goes wrong with a new split, and we would rather say so here than at the claim
  • 32 dB(A) indoor on low, 42 dB(A) on high and 48 dB(A) outdoor, all at 1 m, all measured in a room with a background below 30 dB(A)
  • Washable pre filter, front slide out, no cartridge to keep buying. Fault codes blinked on the indoor unit and published, so no dealer only diagnostic tool is needed
  • Spares held 10 years at published prices, on a spares bank bought with the first production run, a ten year supply clause with the maker, and the moulding tooling held in our name. The compressor and the PCB are bought in, so those rest on the supply clause rather than on tooling, which is the honest distinction
  • 2 years comprehensive on both units including one gas recharge if a factory joint leaks, 5 years separately on the PCB, 10 years on the inverter compressor, covering the compressor itself and not the gas, the labour or the piping
  • The honest trade off is size. A star rating is mostly heat exchanger area, so this outdoor unit is 900 x 700 x 320 mm and 42 kg against 800 x 550 x 285 mm and 32 kg on the 3 star. Measure the ledge before you buy
  • Left out: no ioniser, no UV lamp, no filter subscription, no sealed PCB potting, no dealer only diagnostic tool
  • There is no Shuunnya service network. We send parts and publish the fault codes so any competent technician can work on the unit. We do not promise a turnaround, because we cannot keep one yet

Product information

Capacity, energy and the payback
Rated cooling capacity
3,517 W / 12,000 BTU/h (1 ton), 5,275 W / 18,000 (1.5 ton), 7,034 W / 24,000 (2 ton), to IS 1391 (Part 2)
Test condition
35 C outdoor dry bulb, 27 C indoor dry bulb and 19 C wet bulb
Tonnage check
1 ton of refrigeration is 3,517 W. These are exactly 1.00, 1.50 and 2.00 ton. A 1.5 ton that measures 4,200 W is 1.19 ton
ISEER
5.2, and the BEE 5 star rests on it
Annual energy
480 units (1 ton), 720 (1.5 ton), 960 (2 ton), over the 1,600 running hours BEE assumes
Seasonal running cost
About Rs 3,840, Rs 5,760 and Rs 7,680 at Rs 8 a unit
Against the 3 star
The 3 star at ISEER 3.9 uses 640, 960 and 1,280 units. The gap is 160, 240 and 320 units, or Rs 1,280, Rs 1,920 and Rs 2,560 a year
Payback
Price gaps of Rs 7,000, Rs 9,000 and Rs 11,000, so about 5.5, 4.7 and 4.3 years at 1,600 hours. Bigger unit, faster payback
When the 3 star wins
Below roughly 700 to 900 running hours a year. At 700 hours the 1.5 ton saving falls to about Rs 840, which is close to eleven years
Build, refrigerant and installation
Compressor
Twin rotary inverter, variable 15 to 90 Hz
Coil metal
Copper condenser and evaporator tubes, 0.3 mm wall, aluminium fins. The pipe kit in the box is copper
Why copper
A leaking copper tube is brazed on site. An aluminium micro channel coil is replaced whole
Coil coating
Hydrophilic blue epoxy fin coating on the outdoor coil for coastal air
Refrigerant
R32, GWP 675 against 2,088 for R410A. Mildly flammable, so it needs a competent installer
Factory charge
0.70 kg (1 ton), 1.05 kg (1.5 ton), 1.45 kg (2 ton), for a pipe run up to 5 m. About 20 g a metre beyond that
Installation
Not included and not arranged by us. Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 for a standard fit in most cities, extras on top. That is what installers charge, not our quotation
Outdoor unit size
900 x 700 x 320 mm, 42 kg on the 1.5 ton, against 800 x 550 x 285 mm and 32 kg on the 3 star. A star rating is mostly heat exchanger
Supply
150 V to 280 V, stabiliser free. Cools to 52 C ambient and holds rated capacity to 43 C
Filter
Washable pre filter, front slide out, no cartridge
Noise, warranty, spares and what we do not have
