The Shuunnya promise

A dishwasher that translates its place settings into Indian utensils and tells you which of yours must stay out.

  • Place settings translated into thalis, katoris, tawas and a cooker body
  • Water and units printed for eco and for the 70 C Indian cycle, all three sizes
  • No BEE star scheme exists for dishwashers, so the figures are ours to IEC 60436
  • 2 years comprehensive, 10 on the wash motor, 10 on the tub against rust through

Details

A freestanding dishwasher, and the one page in this category that answers the question Indian buyers actually ask. A place setting is not a person and not a meal. It is a defined test load in IEC 60436, a fixed set of plates, bowls, cups, glasses and cutlery used so that two machines can be compared. Nothing about it describes a kitchen that produces a tawa, a kadhai and a pressure cooker every day, which is why the number tells you almost nothing on its own. So here is the translation. The 8 place setting machine takes roughly a day of washing up for two people cooking twice: 3 thalis, 6 katoris, 4 glasses, a serving bowl, one kadhai, one tawa and the cutlery. The 12 takes about a day for four: 4 thalis, 8 katoris, 6 glasses, 2 serving bowls, a kadhai, 2 tawas, a 5 litre cooker body with its lid, and the cutlery. The 14 adds roughly a third again. The second half of the answer is what must never go in, and it matters more. Dishwasher detergent is strongly alkaline. It blackens aluminium permanently, plain or hard anodised, and most Indian pressure cookers are aluminium. It tarnishes brass and copper in a way you will not polish back out. It strips the seasoning off cast iron and the pan then rusts. It degrades non-stick at 70 C whatever the pan box says. Wooden handles and boards split. And an old haldi stain in a plastic container is not coming out, here or anywhere else. If your kitchen is mostly aluminium and brass, this machine will cost you your utensils, and you should not buy it. We would rather write that than sell it to you twice.

  • There is no BEE star label for dishwashers in India. Any star on a dishwasher is not a BEE star. The figures here are ours, measured to the IEC 60436 test load and cycle
  • Water and energy per cycle, printed for all three sizes: eco is 9.0 L and 0.65 units (8 PS), 10.5 L and 0.72 units (12 PS), 11.5 L and 0.80 units (14 PS). The Indian intensive cycle at 70 C is 11.5 L and 1.15 units, 14 L and 1.35 units, 15.5 L and 1.48 units, and it is the cycle you will actually run
  • The honest comparison: a running tap at 6 litres a minute for twenty minutes is about 120 litres, so the machine wins easily. A careful bucket and mug wash of the same load is about 25 to 35 litres and beats the machine on water. It does not beat it on 70 C water, which is what actually cuts oil
  • 44 dB(A) at one metre to IEC 60704-2-3, quiet enough to run overnight in a flat with an open kitchen
  • Tub in SS 304, 0.6 mm, including the base. The usual cheat is a stainless back wall over a plastic base and floor, described as a stainless interior
  • Basket dimensions instead of adjectives: lower basket takes plates to 320 mm across, so a 300 mm steel thali lies flat and a 340 mm party thali does not. Upper basket clear height 205 mm with the lower basket down and 240 mm with it raised. A kadhai to 280 mm across and 130 mm deep goes in the lower basket on the slope, one at a time. A tawa to 300 mm stands on edge. A 3 or 5 litre cooker body stands in the lower basket and its lid goes in the upper, with the gasket and the safety valve taken out first, because the gasket perishes at 70 C and the valve traps water
  • Built in water softener with a resin cartridge, and the consumable nobody warns you about: it needs dishwasher salt, about 1 kg every six to eight weeks at 350 ppm inlet hardness. Without salt the glasses cloud and the resin does not recover. The resin cartridge itself is a replaceable part here, which on most machines it is not
  • Running cost, stated in full: about Rs 250 a month in salt, rinse aid and detergent at one load a day, plus about Rs 324 a month of electricity on the intensive cycle. Call it Rs 575 a month, and no part of that is hidden in a subscription. There is no detergent pod lock and no cartridge that only we sell
  • Hot water inlet supported to 60 C, so a solar or geyser feed cuts both the cycle time and the units
  • Cycle times are honest: 200 minutes on eco and about 155 on the Indian intensive. A dishwasher that claims to clean in thirty minutes is either using far more water and heat, or not cleaning
  • 2 years comprehensive on the whole appliance, 10 years on the wash motor and 10 years on the stainless tub against rust through. Three separate promises, written as three
  • No Shuunnya service network. Spares are held 10 years against a bank bought with the first production run and tooling held in our name, and until a service route reaches your district a comprehensive claim is answered by replacement or refund and not by a visit
  • Installation is not included and is arranged locally at your cost. It is freestanding, so there is no cabinet work: a 15 mm inlet tap, a drain point and a 16 A socket. The filter at the base of the tub has to be rinsed about once a week on Indian food, and a machine whose filter is never cleaned starts to smell within a month
