Details

Dining chairs in solid sheesham, Dalbergia sissoo, from the Saharanpur timber belt, with a scooped solid seat and a drawbored mortise and tenon frame. A chair takes more racking stress than any other piece of furniture in a house, because a person leans back in it several times a day for years, and it is the one thing that must never ship flat. What the market does instead is send four legs, two side rails and a bag of bolts, which drive into end grain, work loose within a year and cannot be pulled up again once the hole is enlarged. The other cheat is the timber. Rubberwood, Hevea brasiliensis, is stained to a sheesham colour and sold as sheesham, and after the finish goes on the two are indistinguishable without a microscope.

  • Species named: Dalbergia sissoo, solid throughout, no rubberwood and no engineered panel
  • Drawbored mortise and tenon at all eight seat and back joints, glued with D3 class PVA
  • Corner blocks glued and screwed under the seat at all four corners
  • Tested to EN 1728: 150 kg static seat load, 250 N at the backrest, and 25,000 seat impact cycles
  • Kiln-dried to 8 to 10 percent under IS 287, pin-metered before dispatch
  • Waterborne polyurethane, VOC under 50 g per litre, IS 9873 Part 3 migration tested
  • Ships fully assembled. No cam fittings, no knock-down bolts and no bolts into end grain anywhere
  • The seat is scooped solid timber, which is harder than an upholstered one. If you sit through long dinners, add a cushion. And an assembled chair travels in a large carton, so a narrow stairwell needs a moment of thought before delivery day.
