The Shuunnya promise

A softcover notebook that is sewn rather than glued, so it lies open by itself and does not shed leaves, with grammage measured on the bound book instead of quoted from a reel ticket.

  • Sewn in ten signatures of 16 pages, not perfect bound, not milled
  • Lies flat unheld at page 4 and at page 156, from the first opening
  • Measures 100 GSM on a disc cut from the bound book, ISO 536
  • No feathering or bleed at EF to M nibs, light ghosting, broad shows through

Details

An A5 softcover notebook, 160 pages, sewn in ten signatures of sixteen and drawn on with a flexible PUR hinge, which is what lets a soft cover lie open without being held. That construction is the whole product. Almost every softcover notebook in this price band is perfect bound, meaning the folded edges are milled off and the loose leaves are glued to the spine. A perfect-bound book snaps shut when you let go, and when you force it flat you break the glue film and it starts shedding leaves from the middle. The other cheat is the paper. Ninety GSM and eighty GSM are visually identical in a shop, so the label says one and the mill supplies the other, and nobody weighs a notebook. This one is measured on a disc cut from the bound book, not quoted from the mill's reel ticket.

  • 160 pages, which is 80 leaves and 160 writable sides. A page here always means one side
  • Ten sewn signatures of 16 pages, thread through the fold, then a PUR hinge and a 300 GSM drawn-on cover. Not perfect bound, not milled, not glued at the leaf
  • It lies flat and stays flat from the first opening, including at page 4 and page 156, which is where a sewn book earns the difference
  • Text paper measures 100 GSM to ISO 536 on a disc cut from the finished book, tolerance plus or minus 3 percent
  • Opacity 94 percent, ISO 2471, and ISO brightness 88 percent, ISO 2470-1. Ivory rather than blue-white, so it does not glare under a tubelight
  • Fountain pen friendly, stated properly. Extra fine to medium steel nibs: no feathering, no bleed-through, light ghosting. A broad, a wet italic or an iron gall ink will show through and we would rather you knew before you filled a pen
  • Acid free to ISO 9706 and elemental chlorine free, AOX under 0.2 kg per tonne of pulp. ECF is not chlorine free and we do not round it up
  • Virgin fibre. No recycled content and nothing on the cover implying any
  • Ruled is 7 mm with no margin rule. Dot grid is 5 mm pitch with a 0.3 mm dot in 30 percent grey, faint enough to disappear under a drawing. Plain is plain
  • Spine measures about 11 mm at 80 leaves, because 100 GSM at 1.1 bulk is 0.11 mm a leaf, and it will not thicken in storage
