The Shuunnya promise

A pouch that prints its cloth and its thread as two separate figures instead of rounding both to cotton, and that converts its ounce weight into a measured GSM so heavy canvas means something.

  • Cloth 100 percent cotton by FTIR, 12 oz per square yard, 407 GSM measured
  • Thread is polyester and it says so, because cotton thread rots at the seam
  • Azo-free below 30 ppm, ISO 105-C06 grade 4, ISO 105-X12 4-5 dry
  • The indigo is a reactive dye in an indigo shade, not vat indigo dyeing

Details

A flat-bottomed pouch in 12 ounce cotton canvas, 200 mm by 90 mm by 50 mm, holding about twenty pens. The claim on a canvas pouch is accuracy rather than purity, so the composition is printed in parts rather than rounded to a single line. The cloth is 100 percent cotton. The sewing thread is polyester, because a cotton thread in a bag that lives in a school bag in a humid town rots at the seam within a couple of years and the bag fails at the stitching while the cloth is still perfectly good. Calling the whole pouch 100 percent cotton would be the exact rounding this shelf refuses elsewhere, so both numbers are here. The second thing worth stating is the ounce weight, because canvas is sold by ounces per square yard and nobody converts it: 12 oz is 407 GSM, and a pouch sold as heavy canvas at 8 oz is 271 GSM, which is a third less cloth.

  • Cloth is 100 percent cotton canvas, fibre confirmed by FTIR, at 12 oz per square yard, which is a measured 407 GSM
  • Sewing thread is polyester core-spun, and that is printed rather than folded into the cotton figure. A cotton thread rots at the seam long before the canvas wears out
  • Zip is a size 5 nylon coil with a stainless puller. A coil zip re-meshes after a strain where a metal zip stays open, and it does not abrade a pen barrel
  • Reactive dyed, azo-free below the 30 ppm limit for restricted aromatic amines. Colourfastness to washing grade 4 by ISO 105-C06, rubbing grade 4 to 5 dry and 3 to 4 wet by ISO 105-X12
  • The indigo is a reactive dye in an indigo shade. It is not vat indigo dyeing. Real indigo crocks onto a white shirt and this does not, and we would rather name the dye class than let the colour name suggest a process
  • Formaldehyde below 75 ppm, ISO 14184-1
  • Pre-shrunk, under 3 percent residual shrinkage after three washes at 40 C, ISO 6330, so it does not tighten around what it holds
  • Unlined, so it can be washed and line dried whole. That also means a leaking pen stains the canvas and the stain stays. A lined pouch hides that and traps the ink against the lining instead
  • Flat bottom with a boxed corner, so it stands open on a desk rather than collapsing
  • No plastic label patch, no PVC print and no metal branding plate
  • Bar tacked at both zip ends and at the pull loop, which is where a pouch tears first
