The Shuunnya promise

A dated planner whose page count is set out as arithmetic rather than asserted, that explains its three spare blanks, and that says which nib widths it can and cannot take.

  • 416 pages is 208 leaves in 26 sewn signatures, and the sum is printed
  • 365 dated pages plus 3 blanks, because 365 is not a multiple of 16
  • 80 GSM measured, chosen so a 416-page book stays carryable
  • EF and F write clean, M ghosts clearly, broad shows through in places

Details

A dated planner for 2027, one page per day, thread sewn in twenty-six signatures of sixteen pages and cased onto 2.5 mm board. 1 January 2027 is a Friday and the book starts there. The arithmetic is worth setting out, because a dated planner is where page counts get vague. A signature is 16 pages and 365 is not a multiple of 16, so the daily section runs to 368 pages: 365 dated and three blank at the end. We could have called the book 413 pages and hoped, or counted the endpapers to reach a round number. Instead: 8 pages of front matter, a 4 page year planner, 24 pages of monthly spreads, 368 pages of daily, 12 pages of notes at the back. That is 416, which is 26 signatures exactly, and it is 208 leaves.

  • 416 pages, 208 leaves, 26 sewn signatures of 16. A page is one side. Counted on a lot sample against the printed figure
  • The three blank pages at the end of the daily section exist because of the signature arithmetic above, and we would rather explain them than pretend the book is exactly 365
  • Text paper measures 80 GSM to ISO 536 on a disc cut from the bound book. That is a deliberate compromise: at 100 GSM this book would be 23 mm at the spine and too thick to carry, and a planner you leave at home is not a planner
  • Opacity 91 percent, ISO 2471, which is enough that a ballpoint or a 0.5 mm gel does not distract from the other side
  • Fountain pen, honestly. Extra fine and fine steel nibs write cleanly with no feathering and no bleed. A medium ghosts clearly on the reverse and a broad will show through in places. If you write with a broad, the 120 GSM dot grid journal is the book for you and this one is not
  • Thread sewn and cased. Opens flat on any day of the year, which is the whole point of a book you write in standing up
  • No festival calendar is printed. The dates that matter differ by region and community, and a printed list that is wrong for your town is worse than a blank line, so each day carries a blank occasion line instead
  • Week numbers, a moon phase mark and sunrise and sunset times are not printed either, for the same reason: they change with latitude and this book is sold across the country
  • Acid free to ISO 9706, elemental chlorine free with AOX under 0.2 kg per tonne of pulp. ECF is not chlorine free, and we do not round it up
  • Virgin fibre, no recycled content, and nothing on the cover implying any
  • Weighs about 516 g in A5 and about 732 g in B5, so the size choice is a carrying decision more than a writing one
