Eight weeks, sixteen live sessions of 60 minutes, five students. The rule of the room is that students speak for at least two thirds of every session, because listening to good English has never taught anybody to produce it. Spoken English is sold on two claims that do not survive contact with a classroom. The first is the large live batch, where a learner can sit silent for eight weeks and still be counted as having attended. Five is printed here for that reason. The second is accent training, sold as the point of the exercise; there is none here and there is no attempt to make anyone sound foreign, because being understood is the whole job and imitation is not. Rs 3,600 covers the sixteen sessions, which is Rs 225 a session.
