The Shuunnya promise

An accuracy figure that comes with the range it holds over, a plain statement of what the ten second reading is, and a calibration certificate per unit.

  • Plus or minus 0.1 degrees from 35.5 to 42.0, plus or minus 0.2 outside it
  • The 10 second reading is predictive. 60 seconds gives a direct measurement
  • Calibrated per unit against a NABL-traceable bath at 37.0 and 40.0 degrees
  • IP27 sealed so it washes, mercury free, replaceable LR41 cell

Details

A plain digital clinical thermometer with a flexible tip and a fully sealed body. An accuracy figure with no range attached is not a specification. Almost every thermometer on the shelf prints plus or minus 0.1 degrees and stops there, and a sensor that holds a tenth of a degree at 37 does not hold it at 34 or at 42.5. So the figure here is given in bands, and the band that matters, the fever range, is stated first. The second thing worth knowing is what the ten second reading actually is. It is predictive: the thermometer watches the early rise curve and extrapolates where the temperature will settle. That is a legitimate and normal design and it is not a direct measurement. Hold it for a full 60 seconds and you get a direct reading instead. In our bench data the two agree within 0.1 degrees, and where they differ the 60 second figure is the one to trust. The third is that on a person the instrument is rarely the largest error. Site is. Under the arm reads roughly 0.3 to 0.5 degrees below the mouth, and the mouth roughly 0.5 below rectal. Compare a reading to yesterday's reading from the same site, not to a number from a different one.

  • Accuracy plus or minus 0.1 degrees Celsius from 35.5 to 42.0, and plus or minus 0.2 from 32.0 to 35.4 and from 42.1 to 43.0
  • Resolution 0.1 degrees. Measuring range 32.0 to 43.0 degrees Celsius, switchable to Fahrenheit
  • Calibrated against a NABL-traceable reference in a stirred water bath at 37.0 and 40.0 degrees, unit by unit, with the certificate on this page
  • About 10 seconds to the beep, which is a predictive reading. 60 seconds gives a direct one
  • Flexible tip, which matters when the person holding still is two years old, and a body sealed to IP27 so it can be washed rather than wiped between people
  • Mercury free. A drop on the floor is a nuisance, not a hazard and not a clean-up
  • One LR41 coin cell, user replaceable, about 200 hours of use. Nothing is sealed in and nothing is glued
  • It measures body temperature. It does not diagnose anything, and a number on its own is not a reason to start or stop a medicine
  • The laboratory accuracy figure is a water bath figure. On an arm or under a tongue the technique and the site move the reading further than the instrument does

Product information

Accuracy, resolution and the range each figure holds over
Accuracy, fever range
Plus or minus 0.1 degrees Celsius from 35.5 to 42.0 degrees
Accuracy, rest of range
Plus or minus 0.2 degrees Celsius from 32.0 to 35.4 and from 42.1 to 43.0 degrees
Resolution
0.1 degrees Celsius, or 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit
Measuring range
32.0 to 43.0 degrees Celsius, 89.6 to 109.4 Fahrenheit
Calibration
Every unit checked in a stirred water bath at 37.0 and 40.0 degrees against a NABL-traceable reference thermometer before it is boxed
Standard
Tested to ISO 80601-2-56, the standard for clinical thermometers for body temperature measurement
Time to reading
About 10 seconds to the beep, predictive. About 60 seconds for a direct settled reading
What predictive means
The unit watches the early rise curve and extrapolates the settling point. It is normal design and it is not a direct measurement. Where the two disagree, trust the 60 second figure
Repeatability
Within 0.1 degrees on repeat readings at the same bath temperature
Drift
Recheck against a known reference once a year. A thermometer that has been dropped or left in a hot car should be rechecked sooner
Body, power and washing
Tip
Flexible, so it bends rather than resists. Safer with a child who will not hold still
Sealing
IP27. The whole body can be immersed and washed with soap and water, which is what allows it to be shared between people properly
Mercury
None. This is a thermistor sensor
Display
LCD, large digits, backlit. Last reading recalled at switch-on
Battery
One LR41 coin cell, user replaceable through a screw-off cap. About 200 hours of use
Auto off
After 10 minutes idle
Sites
Under the arm, under the tongue, or rectal, per the instruction card. Each site reads differently and the card gives the typical offsets
Weight and size
12 g with the cell, 133 mm long
Regulatory, warranty and the limits
Regulatory
A notified medical device under the Medical Devices Rules 2017, manufactured under a CDSCO licence. Class A
Electrical safety
Battery powered at 1.5 V. No mains connection, so no mains safety standard applies
What it does
It measures body temperature at the site you put it. That is all it does
What it does not do
It does not diagnose, it does not identify a cause, and a single number is not a reason to start or stop any medicine. Speak to a doctor about what a reading means
Reading well
Same site each time, tip in contact and held still, and no hot or cold drink for fifteen minutes before an oral reading
Warranty
Two years on the unit. The cell is a consumable and is not covered
Service route
There is no Shuunnya service-centre network. A claim means posting it to us, and no turnaround time is promised because none exists yet
In the box
Thermometer, LR41 cell fitted, rigid storage case, calibration certificate, instruction card in English and Hindi
