The Shuunnya promise

The two fatty acids you are actually buying, stated separately per capsule, in the triglyceride form, with the oxidation numbers published.

  • 300 mg DHA and 150 mg EPA per capsule, split rather than combined
  • 72 percent EPA plus DHA by weight of oil, against about 30 percent for fish oil
  • Triglyceride form, assayed per lot by gas chromatography
  • Peroxide not above 5, anisidine not above 20, TOTOX not above 26

Details

Omega-3 grown from Schizochytrium algae in closed tanks, which is where fish get theirs, in a plant cellulose capsule. The classic cheat in this category is a unit swap. A pack shouts 1,000 mg fish oil, and a shopper reads that as 1,000 mg of omega-3. It is not. Standard 18/12 fish oil is 18 percent EPA and 12 percent DHA, so a 1,000 mg capsule carries about 300 mg of the two things you are buying and 700 mg of other fatty acids. The number on the front is the weight of the oil, which is true and useless. The number that matters is EPA and DHA, separately, per capsule, and that is the number most packs bury or state only as a combined total. We print both, split, because they are not interchangeable and a combined figure lets a formulator load the cheaper one.

  • Per capsule: 300 mg DHA and 150 mg EPA, 450 mg of the two together, in 625 mg of algal oil. That is 72 percent EPA plus DHA, against about 30 percent for standard fish oil
  • Total omega-3 including DPA and ALA: 480 mg per capsule. Stated separately so it cannot be passed off as the EPA and DHA figure
  • Assayed per lot by gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection, which is the method that separates the fatty acids rather than weighing the oil
  • Triglyceride form, not ethyl ester. Ethyl ester is the cheaper re-esterified form and it is a different molecule
  • Oxidation controlled and measured: peroxide value not above 5 milliequivalents per kilogram, anisidine value not above 20, TOTOX not above 26. A rancid fish oil capsule tastes of nothing until it repeats on you
  • Grown in closed tanks on a defined feed, so mercury, dioxins and PCBs are designed out, and each lot is tested anyway rather than argued about
  • No fish, no shellfish, no gelatin, no added flavour, no added colour. Vegetarian and vegan
  • Omega-3 is a nutrient, not a treatment. This is for a diet short of it. Nothing here treats a condition, and if you are on a blood thinner ask your prescriber before starting
  • Algal oil is naturally dark. The capsule looks almost black against the light, which is the oil and not a colourant

Product information

What is actually in a capsule
DHA
300 mg per capsule, assayed
EPA
150 mg per capsule, assayed
EPA plus DHA
450 mg per capsule. This is the figure to compare across brands
Total omega-3
480 mg, including 30 mg of DPA and ALA. A larger number, and deliberately not the one on the front of the pack
Algal oil per capsule
625 mg. So EPA plus DHA is 72 percent of the oil, against about 30 percent for standard 18/12 fish oil
Why the split matters
A combined figure lets a formulator load whichever of the two costs less that season. Splitting it removes the room
Method
Gas chromatography with flame ionisation detection on the finished capsule fill, per lot, at an FSSAI-notified laboratory
Form
Triglyceride, the form the algae makes. Not a re-esterified ethyl ester concentrate
Freshness, contaminants and composition
Peroxide value
Not above 5 milliequivalents of oxygen per kilogram
Anisidine value
Not above 20
TOTOX
Not above 26, calculated as twice the peroxide value plus the anisidine value
Heavy metals
Lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium by ICP-MS per lot. Mercury not above 0.05 mg per kg
Dioxins and PCBs
Tested per lot. Closed-tank culture on a defined feed means there is no ocean food chain to concentrate them
Capsule shell
Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and purified water. No gelatin, no carrageenan
Antioxidant
Natural mixed tocopherols in sunflower oil, about 5 mg per capsule, present to hold the peroxide value down
Not present
Fish, shellfish, gelatin, added flavour, added colour, soy, gluten
Taking it, storing it, and the limits
Dose
One capsule a day with food, or as your doctor sets
What this is for
A diet short of EPA and DHA, which a vegetarian diet usually is because the plant omega-3 in flax and mustard is ALA and converts to EPA and DHA poorly
Ask a doctor
Before starting if you take warfarin or another anticoagulant, or if you are booked for surgery
Repeat
There is no fishy repeat because there is no fish oil, but any oil capsule can repeat if taken on an empty stomach. Take it with a meal
Storage
Below 25 degrees in the closed opaque bottle. Refrigeration is not needed and is not a substitute for a fresh lot
Regulatory
A health supplement under the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals) Regulations 2016, licensed under the FSS Act 2006. Not a drug
