The Shuunnya promise

Slow structured breathing with a screening that is allowed to end in a refusal, and a written refusal to run the forceful over-breathing practices that make the technique dramatic.

  • No hyperventilation, no forced retention, no cathartic group release
  • Screened at the door, and a no comes with a full refund the same minute
  • Around six breaths a minute, extended exhale, box breathing, long rest
  • Stop means stop, and nobody is talked through it or encouraged to push on

Details

Fifty minutes of slow, deliberate breathing practice, screened before you start, done lying down or seated, with nothing forceful in it at any point. Nothing forceful, and this is the whole safety position. No rapid over-breathing, no holotropic-style hyperventilation, no thirty-round Wim Hof cycles, no long forced retentions. Those practices are popular and they are not harmless: sustained over-breathing drops carbon dioxide, and that produces dizziness, tingling, and in some people carpopedal spasm, where the hands and feet cramp into a claw. People are told that is a release. It is a chemistry change, and doing it near water or standing is how it becomes dangerous. What is taught instead is slow: extending the out-breath, breathing at around six cycles a minute, box breathing, and a long settled rest at the end. It is far less dramatic and it is the part of breathwork that a person can safely take home and use in a queue at a bank. Screening happens before you sit and it can end in a no. Pregnancy, uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, epilepsy, glaucoma, recent surgery, a hernia, severe asthma, or a psychiatric condition involving psychosis, mania or severe trauma. Some of those change the practice and some mean the honest answer is not today, and you are told which at the door with a full refund. The A.P. Colony room is being stood up and the timetable is not running yet. We are stating the room and the cap we have, not a facility that is already busy.

  • 50 minutes: screening and settling 10, slow practice 30, rest 10
  • Capped at twelve, on mats, with bolsters and blankets. Chairs for anyone who does not want to lie down
  • No forceful technique, no hyperventilation, no long retention, no group cathartic release
  • No music that pushes a pace, and nothing you are talked into continuing when you have said stop
  • Honest trade-off: this is much less dramatic than the breathwork sold on the internet. Nobody in this room will cry, shake or have an experience. What you get is a practice you can use later, on your own, which is the point

Product information

What happens, and what is deliberately not done
Total
50 minutes. Doors open 10 minutes ahead. Screening happens before you take a mat, not afterwards.
0 to 10 min
Screening and settling. A short set of questions, out of earshot of the room, then finding a position: lying down with a bolster under the knees, or seated, or in a chair.
10 to 40 min
The practice. Lengthening the out-breath, then breathing at around six cycles a minute, then box breathing, each taught slowly and each with the instruction to come back to normal breathing whenever you want. There are pauses between the pieces rather than one continuous push.
40 to 50 min
Rest, ten minutes, breathing normally. This is the part that settles the nervous system after the work and it is not optional or shortened.
What is never done here
Rapid over-breathing. Holotropic-style sessions. Thirty-round cold-exposure breathing cycles. Long forced breath retention. Group cathartic release with music driving a pace. None of it, at any price, and not on request.
Why not
Sustained over-breathing lowers blood carbon dioxide. That gives dizziness, tingling and sometimes carpopedal spasm, where hands and feet cramp closed. It is often described in the room as a release, and it is a chemistry change. Near water or standing up it is how people get hurt.
Cap
Twelve, on mats. Lying down needs mat space, and the person running the room has to be able to see every face.
The room, honestly
One room of about 340 square feet, roughly 22 ft by 15 ft 6 in, on the ground floor in A.P. Colony. Twelve mats at 6 ft by 2 ft is 144 square feet of mat and the rest is space to walk between them. There is one toilet, a shoe rack and a water filter. There is no changing room, no shower, no lockers and no cafe. It is a room, not a facility.
Getting in
Ground floor, one step at the entrance, so a wheelchair needs a hand over that step. Street parking for two-wheelers outside; a car parks on the lane. Tell us before you book if the step is a problem and we will meet you at it.
What the struck price is
Rs 419 is the standing rate. Rs 349 is the opening rate while the A.P. Colony room fills up. Teaching four people in a room built for twelve costs the same as teaching twelve, and the opening rate is us carrying that rather than the first few people carrying it.
Screening, and when the answer is no
Screened for
Pregnancy. Uncontrolled high blood pressure. Heart disease or arrhythmia. Epilepsy. Glaucoma or a retinal condition. Recent surgery. Hernia. Severe or poorly controlled asthma. A psychiatric condition involving psychosis, mania or severe trauma. Recent alcohol or a stimulant that morning.
What a yes with conditions looks like
Most of the list means the practice is shortened and kept entirely to normal-depth breathing with no retention at all, which is still a real session. You are told exactly what is being changed and why.
What a no looks like
Told at the door, in private, with the whole Rs 349 refunded on the spot. Nobody is let into the room on a maybe.
Stop means stop
At any point, without explaining. You lie there and breathe normally for the rest of the session, or you leave. No one will coach you through it, ask you to stay with it, or tell you the difficult part is the useful part.
Asthma inhaler
Bring it and keep it beside your mat. The person running the room will ask you to show her where it is before starting.
No religion, no ritual, no guru
Nothing is chanted at you. There is no mantra to be given, no initiation, no lineage claimed, no photograph of a teacher on the wall and no donation box. Nobody will ask you to come back on a schedule or join anything. You may sit in the room and never speak to anyone, and that is a complete way to use it.
If you cannot come
Cancel more than 4 hours before and it is refunded in full. Inside 4 hours there is no refund, and the reason is the cap: the seat was held and somebody else was turned away from it. If you simply do not turn up, it is the same. This is stated here rather than discovered afterwards.
The membership
Meditation Membership, Monthly at Rs 1,200 covers breathwork, guided meditation and the Sunday sitting. At Rs 349 a session it pays from the fourth breathwork session in a month.
Who runs the room, and if something goes wrong
The teacher named on the timetable is the teacher in the room
Whoever is listed teaches. If a substitute is unavoidable, the change is on the door and in a message before the session, and you can turn round and leave with a full refund without saying anything to anybody. The advertised teacher not being the one who teaches is the standing complaint about Indian classes and it is a fixable one.
Who runs it
A teacher with formal training in breath practice and a current first aid certificate, verified with the issuing body. There is no statutory registration in India for teaching breathwork, so there is nothing to display, and the honest version of that sentence is more useful than a framed certificate from an unverifiable body.
The premises
Ground floor room in A.P. Colony, Gaya, on a municipal trade licence, registered under the Bihar Shops and Establishments Act.
If you feel unwell
Dizziness or tingling means stop and breathe normally, and the teacher will come to you. If it does not settle within a few minutes we call whoever you want called, there is no charge for the session, and we pay for the doctor visit.
If the session was poor
A session that ran forceful practices, skipped the screening or cut the rest short is refunded in full. Tell us within seven days.
The honest gap
The A.P. Colony room is being stood up and the timetable is not running yet. We are stating the room and the cap we have, not a facility that is already busy.
