Waxed Canvas Toiletry Kit

A flat-bottom toiletry kit in 14 oz waxed cotton duck. It stands open on a hotel counter instead of collapsing, because the base is double layered over a removable board and the corners are stiffened. The lining is where these bags are decided and where they are cheapest. A sealed nylon or PVC lining is bonded in, so when something leaks into it, and something always does, the spill sits in a bag you cannot open and cannot dry, and the whole kit goes in the bin. This lining is a coated cotton that lifts out entirely, washes, dries, and goes back. That single decision is most of what you are paying for. The cloth is the usual battleground. Fourteen ounces per square yard is 475 grams per square metre, so both numbers are printed below and can be checked against each other. And waxed here means impregnated: paraffin and beeswax driven into the weave, reproofable with a hair dryer for the life of the bag. The common substitute is a polyurethane film on the face of plain duck, which beads water the same way for one season and then cracks along the folds with nothing underneath to restore. FTIR on a scraping separates them and we run one per roll.

• This is not the transparent one litre bag airport security asks for. It holds that bag along with everything else, and it is opaque on purpose.
