The Shuunnya promise

An 18 oz cloth stated in grams as well as ounces, waxed through the weave rather than coated on the face, on hardware that is solid brass and stainless rather than plated zinc.

  • Wax impregnated through the weave, FTIR confirmed, never a PU film
  • 18 oz stated as 610 GSM base and 700 GSM waxed, IS 1964
  • Laptop sleeve suspended 30 mm clear of the base, flannel lined
  • Solid brass and stainless hardware, no plated zinc to flake

Details

A commuting backpack in 18 oz waxed cotton duck with a suspended laptop sleeve. Eighteen ounces per square yard is 610 grams per square metre, and both figures are printed because the ounce number on its own is the easiest thing in this category to inflate. Suspended means the sleeve hangs from the top seam and stops 30 mm above the base, so when you set the bag down hard the machine does not take the shock. The sleeve is lined in brushed cotton flannel and closes with a strap rather than a zip that can drag across a lid. The cheat that matters most here is the cloth itself. Waxed canvas is supposed to be impregnated, the wax driven into the weave so it can be melted back in with a hair dryer for the life of the bag. What is often sold instead is plain duck with a polyurethane or acrylic film on the face. It beads water identically for one season, then cracks along the folds and peels, and there is nothing in the weave to reproof. FTIR on a scraping settles it and we run one per roll. The hardware carries the second cheat: plated zinc looks exactly like solid brass on day one and starts flaking at the buckle tongue by month six.

  • 18 oz cotton duck, 610 GSM base, about 700 GSM waxed, measured to IS 1964
  • Paraffin and beeswax impregnated, FTIR confirmed, not a PU or acrylic film
  • Suspended 16 inch laptop sleeve, flannel lined, 30 mm clear of the base
  • 2 mm full-grain vegetable-tanned leather base corners and pull tabs, ISO 17131
  • Chromic oxide nil by ISO 5398, chrome VI under 3 mg per kg by ISO 17075-1
  • Solid brass buckles and stainless steel D-rings, no plated zinc anywhere
  • Moulded closed-cell foam back panel, stitched in rather than glued, replaceable
  • YKK water-resistant coil zips, number 10 on the main compartment
  • Trolley pass-through sleeve and a hidden back pocket
  • No PU-coated cloth sold as waxed, no glued back panel, no printed leather trim
  • At 610 GSM plus wax this is a heavy bag empty, and that is the trade for a cloth that can be reproofed for twenty years instead of replaced in three.
