Waxed Canvas Duffel

A cylinder duffel in 18 oz waxed cotton duck on a full-grain leather base panel. Eighteen ounces per square yard is 610 grams per square metre, and printing only the ounce figure is how this category inflates a cloth, so both go below. The litre figure is the other soft number in luggage, quoted from an external box that includes handles and padding. A cylinder has a formula, so ours are computed from it and stated with the dimensions that produce them: the 20 L is 24 cm across and 45 cm long, which is 20.4 litres, and the same sum holds for the other two. Check them. The base is the part that meets airport floors, gym floors and truck beds, so it is 2.5 mm full-grain leather rather than more cloth, riveted and stitched through a double-layer bottom. Full-grain means the outer surface of the hide with its pores intact, confirmed uncorrected under a microscope, rather than the split with an embossed grain that the trade sells as genuine leather. The main zip is a YKK number 10 running the full length of the top, which means the bag opens flat instead of forcing you to burrow.

• Waxed canvas softens with use and the crease lines go pale. Rubbing warms the wax back in. It is meant to look travelled and it will, quickly.
