The Shuunnya promise

Real handloom, proved by the mark, with the fibre, the weight, the shrinkage and the stitch count all measured and printed.

  • Handloom Mark on every shirt, against powerloom cloth sold as handloom
  • 100 percent cotton by ISO 1833, with no polyester hidden in the weft
  • 140 GSM to ISO 3801 and size under 1 percent, so no starch fakes the weight
  • Shrinkage under 2 percent after five washes, so the size chart stays true

Details

A full-sleeve shirt in 140 GSM handloom cotton woven in Bhuj, Kachchh, in 60s two-ply yarn, and every piece carries the Handloom Mark, the Government of India tag issued through the Textiles Committee that certifies the cloth was woven on a handloom. That mark is the point, not decoration. Powerloom cloth sold as handloom is one of the largest frauds in Indian textiles, because the word carries a premium and mill cloth is indistinguishable to a shopper standing in a shop. Three more cheats sit on a shirt at this price: polyester spun into the weft and the label still reading 100 percent cotton, a GSM printed on the tag that the cloth has never actually weighed, and starch loaded into the finish so the cloth feels substantial on the shelf and collapses in the third wash.

  • Handloom Mark on every piece, and the cluster is named, Bhuj in Kachchh
  • 100 percent cotton by fibre composition, tested to ISO 1833, no polyester in warp or weft
  • 140 GSM measured to ISO 3801, not a figure printed on a tag
  • Size content under 1 percent after desizing, so the hand you feel is cloth and not starch
  • Residual shrinkage under 2 percent after five washes, tested to ISO 6330
  • Colourfast 4 to 5 on the ISO 105 grey scale to washing and dry rubbing, 4 to wet rubbing
  • 16 stitches per inch at the collar, placket and cuffs, single-needle at the armhole
  • Handloom cloth carries slubs and a slightly uneven selvedge, which is the loom and not a fault
  • Deep shades give up a little colour on the first wash, so wash it alone once
  • It creases through the day, because there is no resin finish on it to stop that

Product information

Size chart, garment measurements in inches
How to read it
These are GARMENT measurements, taken flat and doubled for chest. Chest carries about 4 in of ease over the body, so take your usual shirt size.
S
Chest 42, length 29, shoulder 17, sleeve 24.5. Fits a body chest of 38 to 39 in.
M
Chest 44, length 30, shoulder 17.75, sleeve 25. Fits a body chest of 40 to 41 in.
L
Chest 46, length 31, shoulder 18.5, sleeve 25.5. Fits a body chest of 42 to 43 in.
XL
Chest 48, length 32, shoulder 19.25, sleeve 26. Fits a body chest of 44 to 45 in.
XXL
Chest 50, length 33, shoulder 20, sleeve 26.5. Fits a body chest of 46 to 47 in.
Tolerance
Plus or minus 0.5 in, which is what a cut-and-sewn garment honestly holds
Between sizes
Take the larger. Handloom cotton relaxes slightly with wear and will not gain the inch back.

Care, and what it will honestly do

First wash
A little colour comes out and the cloth softens. Both settle after two washes.
Dry
Line dry on a hanger, do not tumble dry
Iron
Medium iron while slightly damp, collar first
Creasing
It creases. There is no wrinkle-free resin on it, and putting one there would mean formaldehyde on the cloth.
Repair
Collar and cuffs can be turned by a tailor when the folds wear through
