The Shuunnya promise

Two layers of real cotton with no polyester slip hidden underneath, dyed with plants, and nothing metal or scratchy anywhere on it.

  • Self-lined in the same cotton, never a polyester taffeta lining under it
  • Natural madder and myrobalan with no azo dyes, screened to EN 14362-1
  • No metal anywhere, so no nickel release, and no cord at the neck to EN 14682
  • No sequins, no glitter and no glued motifs that come off into a mouth

Details

A frock in mul-mul woven in the Phulia cluster, Nadia district, West Bengal. Mill-woven cloth, carrying no handloom claim because it is not handloom. Two layers of 60 GSM, self-lined in the same cotton, which is what makes it opaque without a lining, and mul-mul is chosen because it is an open weave with high air permeability: a child running through an April afternoon needs the heat to leave the cloth, not to be trapped by a smooth synthetic lining. That lining is the cheat. A cotton frock is very often lined in polyester taffeta, because it costs a fraction of cotton and hangs stiffer, and the label describes only the shell. The child then wears polyester against the skin all day while the parent believes they bought cotton. Beside it: azo dyes, used on girls' wear because bright colour sells and restricted in India and the EU for the aromatic amines they release. Formaldehyde resin for crease resistance. Nickel-plated poppers on a garment pulled on and off twice a day, when nickel is one of the commonest contact allergens there is. And sequins and glued motifs, which come off and go in a mouth.

  • Self-lined in the same cotton mul-mul. No polyester taffeta slip, no viscose lining.
  • 100 percent cotton by ISO 1833, shell and lining both
  • No azo dyes. Natural madder root and myrobalan on an alum mordant, screened to EN 14362-1, nothing detected.
  • Free formaldehyde below 20 mg per kg, ISO 14184-1
  • No metal on the garment. Coconut-shell buttons at the back yoke, double-stitched, no poppers and no zip.
  • No cord at the neck at any size, to EN 14682, and no elastic at the waist at all
  • No sequins, no glitter print, no glued motifs
  • 60 GSM per layer, 120 GSM total, measured to ISO 3801
  • Natural dye rates 3 to 4 to washing on the ISO 105 grey scale. It settles about a shade lighter over two washes, then holds. That is the trade for a dye you can accept on a child.
  • Mul-mul creases as soon as a child sits down, and it will crease all day
  • Allow 2 to 3 percent shrinkage on the first wash. The cut carries the allowance.

Product information

Size chart, by child height in cm
How to read it
Choose by the child's HEIGHT, not by age. Height and chest are BODY measurements; the rest are the finished GARMENT, laid flat and doubled.
1-2 Y
Body height 80 to 92 cm, body chest 52 cm. Garment chest 58 cm, frock length 46 cm from shoulder, sleeve 15 cm.
2-3 Y
Body height 92 to 98 cm, body chest 54 cm. Garment chest 61 cm, frock length 50 cm from shoulder, sleeve 16 cm.
3-4 Y
Body height 98 to 104 cm, body chest 56 cm. Garment chest 64 cm, frock length 55 cm from shoulder, sleeve 17 cm.
5-6 Y
Body height 110 to 116 cm, body chest 60 cm. Garment chest 69 cm, frock length 63 cm from shoulder, sleeve 19 cm.
7-8 Y
Body height 122 to 128 cm, body chest 64 cm. Garment chest 74 cm, frock length 71 cm from shoulder, sleeve 21 cm.
9-10 Y
Body height 134 to 140 cm, body chest 69 cm. Garment chest 80 cm, frock length 79 cm from shoulder, sleeve 23 cm.
Length
Measured at centre back from the shoulder seam to the hem. At 9-10 Y that sits just above the knee.
Shrinkage allowance
Cut 2 to 3 percent long, because mul-mul always relaxes on the first wash
Tolerance
Plus or minus 1 cm
Safety, fibre and construction
Lining
Self-lined in the same cotton mul-mul. No polyester taffeta, no viscose.
Fibre composition
100 percent cotton in shell and lining, tested to ISO 1833
Weight
60 GSM per layer, 120 GSM total, measured to ISO 3801
Weave and origin
Open plain weave mul-mul, mill-woven in the Phulia cluster, Nadia, West Bengal, not handloom
Why mul-mul
High air permeability, so heat leaves the cloth. Chosen for breathability on a running child, not for the look.
Dye
Natural madder root and myrobalan on an alum mordant
Azo dyes
EN 14362-1, no restricted aromatic amine detected
Formaldehyde
Below 20 mg per kg free formaldehyde, ISO 14184-1
Nickel
No metal on the garment at all, so no nickel release. Coconut-shell buttons, double-stitched.
Cords
No cord or tie at the neck at any size, to EN 14682
Elastic
Cotton-covered elastic at the sleeve hem only, none at the waist
Labels
Printed in the side seam, nothing stiff at the neck
Trims
No sequins, no glitter print, no glued motifs, no plastic buttons
Residual shrinkage
2 to 3 percent on the first wash, ISO 6330, allowed for in the cut
Care, and what it will honestly do
Wash
Machine wash cold in a mesh bag with a mild detergent
First two washes
Wash separately. The plant dye settles about a shade lighter, then holds.
Colourfastness
3 to 4 to washing on the grey scale, lower than azo dye gives, which is the trade being made
Dry
Line dry in shade, never tumble dry. Strong sun fades plant dye faster.
Iron
Medium iron, or leave it soft
Creasing
Mul-mul creases within minutes of a child sitting down. Nothing has been put on the cloth to stop that.
