The Shuunnya promise

A festival set with the loom proved by the mark, dyed with plants instead of azo chemistry, and every safety number printed because a parent cannot test any of it.

  • Handloom Mark on the set, against powerloom cloth sold as handloom
  • Natural indigo and myrobalan, no azo dyes, screened to EN 14362-1
  • No metal fasteners and no nickel, and no neck cord at any size to EN 14682
  • Free formaldehyde under 20 mg per kg and under 2 percent shrinkage

Details

A festival kurta and pyjama in 120 GSM handloom cotton woven in Erode, Tamil Nadu, carrying the Handloom Mark issued through the Textiles Committee, and dyed with natural indigo and myrobalan on an alum mordant. Two separate frauds are being answered here. The first is the one the mark exists for: powerloom cloth sold as handloom, undetectable in a shop and one of the largest frauds in Indian textiles. The second is the one that matters more on a child. Azo dyes release aromatic amines that are restricted in India and the EU and are used on childrenswear precisely because festival colours sell. Formaldehyde resin goes on to keep the garment crisp on a hanger. Nickel-plated poppers go on because they are cheap, and nickel is one of the commonest contact allergens there is. And a garment that was never pre-shrunk drops a full size, which on a child means the set is finished after one wash rather than one season.

  • Handloom Mark on the set, woven in Erode, Tamil Nadu
  • No azo dyes. Natural indigo and myrobalan on an alum mordant, screened to EN 14362-1, nothing detected.
  • Free formaldehyde below 20 mg per kg, ISO 14184-1
  • No nickel anywhere. Coconut-shell buttons, no poppers, no metal trims.
  • No cord at the neck at any size, to EN 14682. The only drawstring is at the pyjama waist, flat, and knotted at both ends.
  • 100 percent cotton by ISO 1833, 120 GSM measured to ISO 3801
  • Residual shrinkage under 2 percent after five washes, ISO 6330
  • 2 in let-down hem on the kurta, so it fits through a growth spurt instead of being outgrown
  • Natural dye is genuinely less colourfast than azo dye. It rates 3 to 4 to washing and settles a shade lighter over two washes. That is the trade for a dye you can accept against a child's skin.
  • Wash it separately for the first two washes

Product information

Size chart, by child height in cm
How to read it
Choose by the child's HEIGHT, not by age, because children of one age vary by a hand span. Height and chest are BODY measurements; the rest are the finished GARMENT, laid flat and doubled.
1-2 Y
Body height 80 to 92 cm, body chest 52 cm. Kurta chest 60 cm, kurta length 46 cm, sleeve 24 cm. Pyjama waist 46 cm relaxed, length 45 cm.
2-3 Y
Body height 92 to 98 cm, body chest 54 cm. Kurta chest 63 cm, kurta length 50 cm, sleeve 27 cm. Pyjama waist 48 cm relaxed, length 50 cm.
3-4 Y
Body height 98 to 104 cm, body chest 56 cm. Kurta chest 66 cm, kurta length 54 cm, sleeve 29 cm. Pyjama waist 50 cm relaxed, length 54 cm.
5-6 Y
Body height 110 to 116 cm, body chest 60 cm. Kurta chest 71 cm, kurta length 61 cm, sleeve 34 cm. Pyjama waist 54 cm relaxed, length 62 cm.
7-8 Y
Body height 122 to 128 cm, body chest 64 cm. Kurta chest 76 cm, kurta length 68 cm, sleeve 39 cm. Pyjama waist 58 cm relaxed, length 70 cm.
9-10 Y
Body height 134 to 140 cm, body chest 69 cm. Kurta chest 82 cm, kurta length 75 cm, sleeve 44 cm. Pyjama waist 62 cm relaxed, length 78 cm.
Growing room
A 5 cm let-down hem is folded into the kurta and can be released by any tailor, which buys most of a size
Pyjama length
Measured at the side from the top of the waistband to the hem
Tolerance
Plus or minus 1 cm
Safety, fibre and construction

Natural indigo and myrobalan on an alum mordant, no synthetic dye
Azo dyes
EN 14362-1, no restricted aromatic amine detected

Below 20 mg per kg free formaldehyde, ISO 14184-1
Nickel
No metal fasteners at all, so no nickel release. Buttons are coconut shell, double-stitched.
Cords
No cord or tie at the neck at any size, to EN 14682. Pyjama drawstring is flat, tacked, and knotted at both ends so it cannot be pulled through.
Fibre composition
100 percent cotton, tested to ISO 1833

Weave, origin and proof
Plain weave handloom, Erode, Tamil Nadu, carrying the Handloom Mark

Care, and what it will honestly do
Wash
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent
First two washes
Wash separately. Natural dye releases and the shade settles about one step lighter, then holds.
Colourfastness
3 to 4 to washing is genuinely lower than an azo dye would give. It is the price of a dye you can accept on a child.
Dry
Line dry in shade. Strong sun fades plant dye faster.
Iron
Medium iron while damp
Growing
Release the 5 cm hem at the first tailor visit rather than buying the next size
