Details
A match ball hand stitched in Jalandhar with waxed polyester thread through 32 panels, twenty hexagons and twelve pentagons. How a ball is closed is a real durability difference and the three methods are not interchangeable. Hand stitching pulls the seam about 4 mm deep and each stitch is tensioned by a person, which costs a little pace off the surface and gains a great deal of life, because a hand seam can be opened and restitched by any sports shop for the price of a tea. Machine stitching sits shallower and faster and cannot practically be repaired. Thermal bonding has no seam at all: the panels are welded, the ball is quicker and takes on less water, and when it delaminates there is nothing to sew, so the ball is finished. On a hard Indian ground the seam that can be repaired is worth more than the two-tenths of a second. The bladder is the other real choice. Natural latex has the better touch and rebound and loses a little air every week. Butyl holds pressure for a month and feels dead by comparison. This one is latex, held in a lined carcass, and it is replaceable through the valve panel, which is the repair that keeps a good ball alive after the bladder goes. On certification, plainly: the FIFA Quality Programme measures exactly the parameters below and licenses its mark per ball model. We have not applied and this ball carries no such mark. What is printed instead is the same measurement set, run at a NABL-accredited laboratory.
- 32 panels, hand stitched, about 690 stitches per ball in waxed polyester thread
- Seam about 4 mm deep, restitchable by any sports shop, and free from us in the first year
- 1.2 mm polyurethane cover on a four-ply cotton and polyester backing
- Natural latex bladder, replaceable through the valve panel
- Weight, circumference, sphericity, rebound, water absorption and pressure loss all measured per lot
- No thermally bonded seam, no butyl bladder, no printed sponsor panel
- No FIFA mark claimed, because we have not applied for one
- It arrives deflated with a needle and a hand pump. Wet the needle, inflate slowly, and stop inside the range printed below.
- Latex loses a little air every week. That is latex, not a leak, and topping up before play is part of owning one.

- Why one price
- The stitching is the same 32 panels and the same 690 stitches whichever size it is, and the labour is most of the cost
- Pressure
- Inflate to 0.6 to 0.9 bar. The Laws allow up to 1.1 and nothing good happens above 0.9
- What is measured
- Weight, circumference, sphericity, rebound from a 2 m drop, water absorption over 250 compressions, and pressure loss over 72 hours
Care and repairs
- Inflation
- Wet the needle first. A dry needle tears the valve, which is the commonest way a good ball dies
- Latex
- Loses a little air weekly. Top up before play
- Bladder
- Replaceable through the valve panel by any sports shop
- Seams
- Restitchable. We do it free in the first year
- Cleaning
- Damp cloth, dry in shade. Never in the sun, which hardens the cover
