Details

Hand tools built around two things: what the steel is, and how the head is joined to the handle. The head is drop-forged from a single billet of high carbon steel and hardened to 48 to 52 HRC, which is hard enough to hold an edge through a season of cutting roots and still soft enough to take a file when you want to sharpen it. The tang runs the full length of the handle and is riveted through it. Both of those exist because of how a cheap garden set fails, and it fails in exactly two places. The steel is the first. Most sets sold here are pressed from soft mild sheet, which costs a fraction and is perfectly fine in a pot of potting mix and useless in dry clay: the trowel folds along its own curve the first time you lever against a stone, and it never comes back. Hardness is measurable, which is why there is a Rockwell figure on this listing and none on those. The joint is the second. A stub tang is a short spike pushed into a drilled or socketed handle and glued or crimped in, and the neck where that spike meets the blade is the thinnest part of the whole tool while carrying every bit of leverage you apply to it. It snaps there, usually in the first hard season, and there is nothing left to repair.

  • Drop-forged from one billet of high carbon steel, not pressed from mild sheet
  • Hardened to 48 to 52 HRC, stated because it is a testable number
  • Full tang the length of the handle, riveted through, never a glued stub
  • Oiled Indian sheesham handles, no plastic and no painted finish
  • No chrome plating, which chips and then rusts underneath the chip where you cannot reach it
  • Handles, rivets and the secateur blade and spring are all sold as spares
  • Carbon steel is not stainless. It will take a patina and it will rust if you put it away wet, and that is the trade you make for an edge that holds
  • It is heavier in the hand than a pressed set, which is the weight of the steel that does the work
