The Shuunnya promise

An honest men's wash: a slightly higher surfactant load for oilier skin, zinc PCA at a stated dose, nothing that stings a shaved face, and the price difference accounted for.

  • Eleven ingredients, full INCI with percentages, 1 percent line marked
  • Measured pH 5.5 per lot, mild enough to use immediately before shaving
  • No menthol, no camphor, no dye and no scrub beads, on skin that is scraped daily
  • The Rs 20 over the gentle wash is the isethionate and the zinc PCA

Details

A mild gel at pH 5.5 for skin that is oilier on average and gets a blade across it every morning. Eleven ingredients, all with percentages. The cheat in men's grooming is the whole category. A men's face wash is usually an ordinary cleanser base with three things added: menthol, so it stings and the sting reads as strength; a blue or black dye, so it looks like a different product; and a heavier fragrance. Then it is priced above the same base sold to women. There is no male skin chemistry that needs a different molecule. What is true is a matter of averages: adult male facial skin is measurably thicker, around 20 percent, and sebum output is higher, and a face that is shaved daily has had its top layer physically scraped every morning. So the honest men's wash is a slightly higher surfactant load for the oil, zinc PCA for shine, and nothing at all that stings a freshly shaved face. That is exactly what this is, and we are not going to dress it up as anything more. The Rs 20 between this and our gentle daily face wash is not the word on the front. It is the sodium cocoyl isethionate, which costs more than a glucoside, and the zinc PCA. If you have normal or dry skin and do not shave, the gentle daily face wash is a better buy at Rs 245, and if your skin is dry or reactive the cream face wash is better still. If you are oily and breaking out, the clarifying face wash carries salicylic acid at 1.0 percent, which this one deliberately does not, because acid on skin that is shaved daily is easy to overdo.

  • Full INCI, in descending order: Aqua, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phenoxyethanol, Zinc PCA, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric Acid
  • With percentages: Coco-Glucoside 10.0, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate 5.0, Glycerin 4.0, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice 2.0, Phenoxyethanol 0.7, Zinc PCA 0.5, Xanthan Gum 0.4, Allantoin 0.2, Ethylhexylglycerin 0.1, Citric Acid to pH, and Aqua is the balance at 77.1
  • The 1 percent line falls after the aloe, and order below it means nothing
  • Measured pH 5.5 per lot, which is what makes it safe to use straight before a razor
  • Total active surfactant about 9.5 percent, from a glucoside plus an isethionate. No SLS, no SLES, and nothing harsher swapped in for them
  • Zinc PCA at 0.5 percent, a stated dose, for midday shine
  • No menthol and no camphor. Freshly shaved skin has an open route in, and menthol on it is a sting sold as efficacy
  • No dyes. A face wash does not need to be blue
  • No scrub particles: no plastic microbeads and no walnut shell, whose fractured edges cause fine tears on skin that is already being scraped daily
  • No fragrance of any kind, no parfum, no essential oil, none of the 26 EU declarable components. This is the one that costs a men's product something, because the category is sold on smell
  • No parabens, and no MIT or CMIT behind them. Phenoxyethanol 0.7 percent with ethylhexylglycerin 0.1 percent
  • Honest trade-off one: it does not smell of anything, and if you have been buying a face wash partly for how the bathroom smells afterwards, this will feel like a downgrade
  • Honest trade-off two: at 9.5 percent active surfactant it foams moderately, not hugely. Foam is a surfactant property, not a cleaning measurement
  • Honest trade-off three: this will not fix ingrown hairs or razor bumps. Those are a blade and technique problem, and no cleanser sold anywhere solves them

Product information

Full ingredient list, INCI, in descending order
Full INCI
Aqua, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Phenoxyethanol, Zinc PCA, Xanthan Gum, Allantoin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Citric Acid
Aqua
77.1 percent, purified to IP grade
Coco-Glucoside
10.0 percent as supplied, about 52 percent active, so 5.2 percent active surfactant
Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
5.0 percent as supplied, about 85 percent active, so 4.3 percent active surfactant. An isethionate ester, not a sulphate, and the more expensive half of the base
Total active surfactant
About 9.5 percent, against 9.3 in the gentle daily wash. Slightly more, for skin that is oilier on average
Glycerin
4.0 percent
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice
2.0 percent, 1x juice
The 1 percent line
Falls here. Nothing below it is ranked by dose
Phenoxyethanol
0.7 percent, preservative
Zinc PCA
0.5 percent, for surface oil
Xanthan Gum
0.4 percent
Allantoin
0.2 percent, soothing
Ethylhexylglycerin
0.1 percent, preservative booster
Citric Acid
To pH, adjusted per lot to 5.5
What is left out, and what took its place
Menthol and camphor
Neither. Nothing replaced them, because the sting was never doing anything. It is the single most common ingredient in this category and it is there to be felt, not to work
Dyes
None. The gel is clear because a face wash has no reason to be blue
Scrub particles
None. No plastic microbeads, no walnut shell, no apricot kernel
Fragrance
None. No parfum, no essential oil, no masking fragrance, none of the 26 EU declarable components
Sulphates
No SLS, no SLES. Replaced by coco-glucoside and sodium cocoyl isethionate, both named with percentages above
Parabens and isothiazolinones
No parabens, and no MIT or CMIT swapped in for them. Phenoxyethanol 0.7 percent with ethylhexylglycerin 0.1 percent
Also absent
Alcohol denat, mineral oil, silicones, triclosan, charcoal, and any acid
What we will not claim
That men's skin needs a different molecule. It needs a different average dose of the same ones, and this listing says which and how much
Who it is for, how to use it, and the shelf around it
Skin type
Normal to oily, and skin that is shaved daily
Buy a different one if
Your skin is normal to combination and you do not shave daily, take the gentle daily face wash at Rs 245. If it is dry or reactive, take the cream face wash. If it is oily and breaking out, take the clarifying face wash, which carries salicylic acid at 1.0 percent
Why it costs more than the gentle wash
Sodium cocoyl isethionate is dearer than a glucoside, and zinc PCA is an added active at 0.5 percent. That is the Rs 20. It is not the word men's
Measured pH
5.5, per lot
Before shaving
Wash first. Warm water and 30 seconds of a mild wash soften the beard and lift the hair, which does more for a close shave than any pre-shave product
After shaving
Rinse cool, pat dry, moisturise on damp skin. The light gel moisturiser if you are oily, the everyday face cream if not
Frequency
Twice a day is fine. More than that is not
Cost per use
About 1.5 ml a wash, so the 100 ml is 66 washes at Rs 4.02 and the 200 ml is 133 at Rs 3.42
Shelf life
24 months unopened, 6 months after opening
Regulator
A cosmetic under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act 1940 and the Cosmetics Rules 2020, governed by CDSCO. Made in India, licence number on the pack
