Square cotton cloths for a house where a tap is two steps away. Wet one under warm water, use it, drop it in a lidded bucket. The arithmetic first, because it is the reason to consider them at all. Ten wipes at Rs 449, each surviving about 300 wash cycles, is 3,000 uses, which is Rs 0.15 a use. Twenty at Rs 799 is 6,000 uses, or Rs 0.13. The disposable wipe on this same shelf is Rs 2.07 a sheet in the small pack and Rs 1.73 in the largest. So the cloth is roughly a twelfth of the cost per wipe, and ten of them displace about 3,000 disposable sheets over their life. Laundry is the part nobody counts: added to a baby wash that was going to run anyway, the marginal cost is close to nothing, and if it forces an extra 60 C load a week it is roughly 0.6 units of electricity and 50 litres of water, which is a few rupees. Either way the disposable does not get near it. Now the part the category leaves out. Somebody has to do this. There is a bucket by the changing table, a wash every second day, and a rule about fabric conditioner that has to be kept. A nappy with stool takes two or three cloths and a rinse under a tap before they go in the bucket, and out of the house a used cloth needs a wet bag and is a genuine nuisance. Many families run cloth at home and disposables when they are out, and that is a sensible answer rather than a compromise. One more thing, on certification. These are not GOTS-certified and we are not going to write GOTS-grade, which is a phrase that borrows a certificate without holding one. What we can do instead is publish what was tested, which is below.

  • Fibre identity: 100 percent cotton, confirmed by FTIR and optical microscopy. No polyester core, no microfibre, no plastic
  • Undyed and unbleached, so the cloth is the natural colour of the cotton and there is no dye to test for, no azo colourant question and no colourfastness to fail
  • No optical brightener, checked under UV. A brightener is the cheapest way to make an undyed cotton look whiter and it is a finish sitting on the fibre
  • Formaldehyde below the limit of quantification by ISO 14184-1. pH of the aqueous extract 6.8 by ISO 3071
  • No softener finish. That matters practically as well as chemically: a softener coats the fibre and a coated cotton stops absorbing
  • 320 gsm, 20 cm x 20 cm, which is 0.04 square metres and so 12.8 g of cotton a wipe. The 10 pack is 128 g of cloth
  • Absorbency 5.2 times its own mass, gravimetric, so about 67 g of water a wipe. Wetting time under 2 seconds by AATCC 79
  • Residual shrinkage under 4 percent after five wash cycles to ISO 6330. Cotton terry shrinks, and a figure is better than a promise it will not
  • Construction: double sided, smooth plain-weave face for a wipe down and terry loop on the other for a scrub, overlocked edge in cotton-wrapped thread
  • Life about 300 wash cycles, which is our own laundering test to ISO 6330 with mass and thickness checked at intervals. Household water hardness and tumble drying move that number, so treat it as an estimate rather than a warranty
  • No GOTS certificate is claimed for this article, and GOTS-grade is a phrase we are not going to print. The tests above are what we have instead
  • Honest trade-off one: wash at 60 C, not 40. Hygiene needs the higher temperature, and 60 C costs more energy than 40 does. That is a real part of the cost and it belongs in the sum
  • Honest trade-off two: they stain and they stay stained. Undyed cotton and stool are what they are, and bleaching them back would undo the reason they are undyed
  • Honest trade-off three: never fabric conditioner. Not once. It coats the fibre and the cloth stops working, and there is no way to recover it short of a strip wash
  • Honest trade-off four: away from home these are a nuisance, and cloth at home with disposables when out is a perfectly good answer. We sell both and we are not going to pretend the choice is moral
